Our Summer Reading Program theme this year will be "Color Our World." 

Join us Monday mornings in June from 10-11:30am at the Library!  (June 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd.)  There will be reading, crafts, snacks, & fun!

Internet Policy

Collection Development Policy
The Haakon County Public Library & Midland Community Library does not purchase matter or materials that are obscene as defined by SD Codified Laws 22-24-27.

Service Policy
The Haakon County Public Library & Midland Community Library will not allow minors to checkout matter or materials that are deemed obscene as defined by SD Codified Laws 22-24-27. The library will also limit minors from accessing obscene matter and materials by placing those materials on a shelf in a restricted area.

Request for Reconsideration
To challenge material held in the library collection, the following criteria must be met:
• Must reside in Haakon County
• Must be a patron of the Haakon County Library
Patrons seeking reconsideration of materials in the library must complete a Request for Reconsideration of
Material Form. Only one resource at a time is permitted for review. The Library Director will evaluate the
request with input from the staff and send a written decision with reasons for the decision to the person who
requested reconsideration. If the individual is not satisfied with the decision, a written appeal may be
submitted within 10 business days to the Board of Trustees. The Board will address the appeal at their
board meeting and will notify the individual of when and where the meeting will be held. The Board of
Trustees reserves the right to limit the length of public comments. Material under review will remain in
circulation until a determination is made. The Library Director will inform the individual of the Board’s
decision. Any determination regarding whether any matter or material is obscene may be appealed to the
Haakon County Commissioners, in accordance with South Dakota Codified Law 22-24-56. Any determination
made by the Haakon County Commissioners as to whether any matter or material is obscene is subject to
judicial review in the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court.
With respect to the reconsidered materials, the Library Director’s written response or decision of the Library
Board of Trustees, need not be reconsidered for three years following the prior request for reconsideration,
regardless of whether subsequent requests for reconsideration are submitted.
